Composting Intern
In 2019, Lafayette adopted its second Climate Action Plan, committing to carbon neutrality before or by 2035 and a waste diversion goal of 60% by 2035. Interns with the Office of Sustainability help support this goal through programming, outreach, metrics, research, communications, and running the campus composting program.
Intern Description
The Office of Sustainability is seeking members to join the composting team. The compost team is essential for campus compost operations, collecting food waste from specific locations and turning into compost to be reintegrated into soil at LaFarm and other local farms and gardens. This position is paid a starting wage of $9/hour.
Responsibilities:
- Collect food waste/ compostable materials buckets from specific sites on campus
- Load compost inputs (food waste, compostable materials, and brown waste) into the vessel
- Ensure appropriate inputs into the vessel
- Track all inputs in inventory system
- Communicate any challenges, issues, or missed pickups promptly- including suspected problems with the compost mixture and potentially help with troubleshooting
- Attend sustainability all staff meetings and complete administrative tasks (timesheets)
Qualifications:
- Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits
- Reliability, accountability, and timeliness are a must for the success of operations
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Position will require working in all weather conditions and prolonged bending, squatting, standing, and lifting
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Willingness to get your hands dirty
- Interest in sustainability, food systems and waste management
Time Commitment:
- Composting Interns work one or two 2 hour shifts per week commencing in January 2024. If you would like to begin this fall, please select the fall internship option.
